Gray Lodge Area is a hotspot for viewing migratory waterfowl. Over a million ducks and thousands of geese make Gray Lodge their home through the late-fall and earlywinter. The main waterfowl species include Snow Goose, Ross’ Goose, Greater-white Fronted Goose, Northern Pintail, Mallard, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Green-wing Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, and Ring-neck Duck. Herons and egrets are abundant. Raptors can be seen perched in trees or soaring over fields. Deer are common sights as are Desert Cottontail and Blacktail Jackrabbits. Diligent watching will reveal some of the lesserseen wildlife species such as Eurasian Wigeon, Bald Eagles, and Sandhill Cranes. Don’t miss this spectacular display! The Wildlife Area features a self-guided nature trail to a viewing platform, an exhibit museum, a three-mile auto loop and two Observation Hides. Cost is $2.50 per person; under 16 or hunting/fishing license is free. For more information, call (530) 846-7505.
